2010 Nutrition Industry Overview Archived Web Seminar

Nutrition Business Journal’s annual U.S. Nutrition Industry Overview Web Seminar took place on Thursday, August 19, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mountain Time.

Along with NBJ Editorial Director Carlotta Mast and NBJ Director of Market Research Carla Ooyen, participants in this year’s Nutrition Industry Overview Webinar included:

  • Supplement and regulatory expert Loren Israelsen, president of  LDI Group Inc. and executive director of the United Natural Products Alliance. Loren joined the webinar to discuss current threats to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), the uptick in FDA and FTC enforcement activity, and the potential implications of FDA’s impending guidance on new dietary ingredients (NDIs).  Loren brought more than 25 years of dietary supplement, regulatory and commercial experience to this  event.
  • Jane Drinkwalter, vice president of sales at Vitamer Labs, aleading manufacturer of private-label dietary supplements. Jane discussed how the private-label supplement market has fared in the current economy, trends in private-label supplements and what the private-label boom means for branded products.  A Vitamer Labs executive since 1988, Jane is a well-known and well-regarded dietary supplement expert.

Carlotta Mast is the editorial director of NBJ and helps guide the editorial direction for all NBJ products. A graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, Carlotta has 15 years of business and health writing and research experience. She is a regular presenter during NBJ Webinars and at industry conferences and events.
Carla Ooyen is the director of market research of NBJ. In addition to producing market research reports, Carla is responsible for NBJ’s quantitative research, company databases and surveys. Carla earned her MBA from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado.
Loren Israelsen is executive director of the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA), to safety, science and quality. He has been deeply involved in the commercial and regulatory issues facing the global dietary supplement industry since 1980. He has served as vice president/general counsel to the American Herbal Products Association, co-founder and counsel to the European American Phytomedicine Coalition (EAPC), industry liaison to FDA’s Expert Advisory Committee on Ephedra, industry advisor to the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), expert panel member on IFT’s Functional Food Report (2005) and most recently sat as an expert panel member to the Department of Defense / RAND study on dietary supplement use among military personnel. Loren has authored more than 150 articles, book chapters and has lectured in over 30 countries on dietary supplement and functional food issues. He is the recipient of the NBJ Lifetime Achievement Award, the NNFA President’s Award and the B.Y. Morrison Lecture and Medal.
