Functional Beverages Take Center Stage at IFT2010
July 14, 2010
Expect new product launches at this year’s Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting & Food Expo (IFT2010), scheduled to run July 17-20 in Chicago. Recent press releases from several supplement and functional foods manufacturers suggest a loosening of the purse strings for nutrition research & development. The following are just a few of the functional products hoping to take center stage at this year’s IFT:
Innovative Food Processors and InterHealth Nutraceuticals have plans to co-develop and co-market a functional beverage powder targeting joint health. The product, Triple Berry Tempo, will contain the ingredient UC-II from InterHealth.
Bioenergy Life Sciences is launching three new functional products built around their ribose energy supplement. Ribo Morning Toaster Fruit Tarts offer a grab-it-and-go breakfast food; Ribo Charger Creamer offers a low-fat, caffeine-free coffee creamer; and Gabe’sRibo Energy Gel Shots offer real fruit exercise shots in several flavors.
Solbar, the Israeli supplier of functional soy proteins, will introduce a new line of calcium-fortified soy concentrate, Solpro 735. The additive is designed for functional beverage applications, particularly soy milk and dry blends.
NBJ bottom line: Is product development alive and well again in nutrition? NBJ takes a close look at the question in our upcoming issue on the overall U.S. nutrition industry, with mixed results from industry leaders. Many seem to be sticking to their ‘wait-and-see’ approach, with plans for cautious and minimal investment in new products only when the best opportunities arise.
As IFT2010 demonstrates, though, there’s nothing like a big trade show to bring out the industry’s best. The fact that functional beverages are gathering a lion’s share of IFT’s new product announcement is a definite beacon of light for that segment of the industry. Functional foods and beverages have been hard hit in the soft economy, and perhaps hardest hit in the area of new product development.
