Can Vitamin D Help Avoid a C-Section?
The various benefits of vitamin D continue to be reported through various studies. According to a study to be published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, vitamin D deficiencies may lead to higher risk of a C-section among pregnant women.
The study found that a vitamin D deficiency can lead to hypertension and muscle weakness, which are two conditions associated with a higher risk of C-section. Previous studies have linked a D-deficiency to pre-eclampsia, an illness which can threaten both the mother and the baby.
A separate study conducted in Britain found that 87% of the population ages 45 and older had a vitamin D deficiency in the winter months, October through April. A follow-up study found that men over forty with the lowest vitamin D levels had two times more risk of suffering from a myocardial infection. A third study cited in the London Free Press showing that people with vitamin D levels below 15 ng/ml have twice as much of a risk of dying prematurely do to cardiovascular disease.
U.S. sales of vitamins D, H, K and other non-staple letter vitamins accounted for $663 million in sales in 2007, according to NBJ estimates.
